Fire is a hot topic both worldwide and locally in Wisconsin. Did you know that the Wisconsin DNR responded to more than 700 wildland fire calls last year!? As people continue to move into forested areas, the potential for loss of property and lives increases. Yet, fire plays an important natural role in many forest ecosystems.

Join LEAF for a Wildland Fire Education workshop where K-12 educators will explore the history, socio-cultural issues, management, and current status of wildland fire in Wisconsin and beyond. Participants will receive the LEAF Wisconsin K-12 Wildland Fire Lesson Guide, Project Learning Tree’s Environmental Education Activity Guide, and other useful classroom resources. Activities will also include a tour of Treehaven’s fire ecology research plots.

Additional Information

Workshop: On Wednesday, March 11 LEAF will hold a Fire and Our Forests workshop from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at Treehaven in Tomahawk. The $85 registration fee includes the workshop and lunch on Wednesday.

Dinner and a Speaker: For no additional cost, please join us on March 10 from 6:00-8:30 pm for Treehaven’s Dinner and a Speaker event. In “Wind, Water, and Fire in the Boundary Waters,” you will discover the history of fire and its impacts on the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) with Treehaven Resident Ecologist, Elias Anoszko. Elias will also explore what these events can tell us about the future of the BWCAW.

If participating in both the Dinner and a Speaker and the Workshop, LEAF will cover your registration for the Dinner and a Speaker as well as dorm style lodging and breakfast at Treehaven. You will be contacted after registration for your dorm and meal needs.

Substitute reimbursement up to $150 for March 11 is available to your school/district.
